Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
