RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages down to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
