Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

As any prominent awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles in the world and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
