He has done things ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of deaths due to his slashing to international aid amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and this week research forecast his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have dared – genuinely, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the White House to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom have business with public institutions.
We went from 'the gentle will obtain the world' into 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'
As confusing as it is to watch the chief executive try to upend the established notion of democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we learned about into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of affection into an icon of animosity who approves exactly the harshness that he denounced in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself

The apparent and direct truth that Christ from scripture calls for a kind of extreme compassion focused on the impoverished is what has always made the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be controlled. In the fifties it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Conflict for the Best of Us
Therefore I have felt encouraged to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has provided substantial consolation to help build the campaign that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged electorate to show up in large quantities in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags at every demonstration and requests to the highest qualities in US history.
