Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to contest certain calls from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
